We are thrilled to announce that the Norwegian rights of The Life and Art of Tove Jansson – a definitive biography written by Dr. Tuula Karjalainen have been acquired by Heinesen Forlag for publication in 2014. The original Finnish edition Tove Jansson – Tee työtä ja rakasta will be published in October 2013 by Tammi to mark the 100th anniversary of Tove Jansson in 2014. Jansson’s anniversary exhibition will open at Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki in Spring 2014.
Previously, World English rights have been acquired by Penguin, and rights are also sold in Japan to Kawade Shobo Shinsha, in Sweden to Norstedts, and in Finland in Swedish to Schildts & Söderströms.
Tove Jansson (1914-2001) led a long, colorful and productive life, contributing significantly to the political, social and cultural history of 20th century Finland. She was one of Finland’s best-known artists, and her Moomin books are translated in 43 languages. Tove Jansson was an artist of many talents, working as a painter, author, illustrator, scriptwriter and lyricist, among other things, all of which are encompassed by this new biography.

Author bio: Dr. Tuula Karjalainen (b. 1942) is a Finnish art historian and non-fiction writer who has previously worked as a director of the Helsinki Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki. As the author of Tove Jansson’s biography, Tuula Karjalainen has become an expert not only on Jansson’s works but also on her several decades of personal correspondence and journals.
