Next month Finland will be guest of honour at the publishing industry’s largest annual event, the Frankfurt Book Fair. Just in time for Frankfurt, several German publishers are coming out with new works by Finnish authors.
In thrillers, Rowohlt published the 12th entry in Leena Lehtolainen’s iconic Maria Kallio crime series, Wer ohne Schande ist (The Iron Triangle, Tammi 2013), in August. Lehtolainen’s works have been published in 29 languages to date. Arena, meanwhile, has published Salla Simukka’s worldwide YA thriller hit, So rot vie Blut (As Red as Blood, Tammi 2013). As Red as Blood is the first book in the Snow White Trilogy, which has been sold in 46 territories.
In Finnish science fiction, DTV/Reihe Hanser has just published Emmi Itäranta’s speculative fiction debut Der Geschmack von Wasser (Memory of Water, Teos 2012), sold in 18 languages. Earlier this summer Klett-Cotta published Johanna Sinisalo’s Finnisches Feuer (The Core of the Sun, Teos 2013), a sharp vision of a male-dominated police state in which pleasure has been turned into a commodity. Rights to Sinisalo’s works have been sold in 19 languages.
In fiction, next month Mare will publish Johan Bargum’s Septembernovelle (Sailing in September, Schildts & Söderströms 2011), a gripping tale of two men who loved the same woman. Also in October, Surhkamp will publish Miina Supinen’s entirely different kind of triangle drama, the humorous and genre-bending Drei ist keiner zu viel (Ray Girl, WSOY 2013).
This summer Urachhaus published Tuula Karjalainen’s award-winning biography of Tove Jansson, the creator of the Moomins (Tove Jansson: Work and Love, Tammi 2013). Hanser, meanwhile, published Hannele Huovi’s Die Federkette (The Feather Chain, Tammi 2012), a lyrical and melancholy fairy tale that won the 2012 Topelius Prize for the best Finnish youth novel.
