Last month Mintie Das, author of the Storm Sisters YA girl pirate series created in collaboration with Rovio Books, took part in Books At Berlinale, an annual event that introduces film producers to new literary works with strong potential for the big screen. Storm Sisters was one of 11 entries around the world selected for Books at Berlinale.
Das’s visit and Storm Sisters were covered by several international publications, including La Vanguardia, one of Spain’s most widely read newspapers, Yorokobu, a Spanish monthly magazine focusing on design and creativity, Berlin Loves You, a site covering breaking and original news content in Berlin, and Berlin Film Journal, an English-language film publication. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Books at Berlinale participants scored the big-screen potential of Storm Sisters as four out of five “Bears.”
The Elina Ahlback Literary Agency sells world rights to the series. To date rights have been sold in France to Éditions Robert Laffont, in Finland to Tammi Publishers, in Hungary to JCS Media and in Indonesia to Gramedia.
The series starts with The Sinking World, and continues with The Frozen Seas later this year. Contact the Agency for a full English text of The Sinking World!
Set in the late 1700s but told in a lively, contemporary voice, the Storm Sisters series follows five girls of different ages from various corners of the world who sail the high seas on their own, facing dangerous enemies and protecting themselves with a secret pirate identity called “The Pirettes.”
“When I was writing the first book, The Sinking World, I was traveling through many countries every month. I had a first draft, but then I took a trip to Asia, and I wondered what it would be like for these girls to travel there in the 1780’s. There is a dark element in there, and the editors [at Rovio] were really open to the idea of things getting darker. I definitely bring a lot from my own experiences, and my own memories,” Das said in an interview with Berlin Film Journal.
