Finnish Weird: Johanna Sinisalo’s new novel The Blood of Angels published to rave reviews

Author Johanna Sinisalo’s new novel, The Blood of Angels (Enkelten verta), was published in Finland in late September and received great reviews:

‘What if the human animal truly has destroyed its entire ecological niche, and the damage is now irreversible? What if all we have to look forward to is slow decay and misery, and in the end, eternal night? Even if this is the case, there’s one piece of good news: Johanna Sinisalo continues to write arresting novels on the theme. And of her novels to date, The Blood of Angels is probably the finest.’ − Miina Supinen, Image 9/2011

‘Johanna Sinisalo chills the blood with her vision of the disappearance of bees (–) Sinisalo succeeds wonderfully in depicting the threats facing the entire world through one individual’s personal tragedy.’ − Sanna Sevänen, Aamulehti, September 24, 2011

Sinisalo’s work is often categorized as fantasy or science fiction, but the author herself prefers to describe her novels as ‘weird’. “‘Weird’ is a good term for all ‘diagonal’ genres of this kind, hybrids of these genres, and genres that don’t have any other name”, Sinisalo points out in an article called “Weird and proud of it”, published in the Literary Journal Books from Finland.
