We are so happy to report that Salla Simukka’s Topelius Prize winning dystopian YA novels Without a Trace (Jäljellä, Tammi Spring 2012) and Elsewhere (Toisaalla, Tammi Fall 2012) have been published simultaneously in Dutch by Clavis Books to an enthusiastic reception! Spoorloos and Een Andere Wereld, translated by Sophie Kuiper, are the first foreign editions of Simukka’s works, famous for the internationally bestselling Snow White Trilogy which is sold in 37 territories to date. Clavis plans to follow with the release of the first installment in the Trilogy, As Red as Blood (Punainen kuin veri, Tammi 2013), in Spring 2014.
Established in 1946, the Topelius Prize is Finland’s oldest prize in recognition of the best Finnish book for children and young people. Jury’s motivations:
Salla Simukka’s novels [Without a Trace and Elsewhere] form an integrated whole. Both works resonate with important themes regarding individuals – such as daring to be yourself – as well as society, including the pressure to succeed, power and freedom of choice. The books also take a stance on the values of the contemporary world. For too many young people, the virtual world becomes all too real. Salla Simukka portrays family relationships in a realistic, non-sensationalised way, without any great entanglements. This allows the book’s main storyline to remain strong.
Salla Simukka (b. 1981) is a translator and author of juvenile fiction. She has written 11 YA novels and one collection of short prose for young readers, and has translated adult fiction, children’s books, and plays. Salla also writes book reviews for the newspapers Helsingin Sanomat and Hämeen Sanomat and the weekly Suomen Kuvalehti. In addition, she is associate editor at a literary publication for young people, Lukufiilis.
