We are delighted to report that Tokyo Sogensha has published Leena Lehtolainen’s Upwind (Tuulen puolella, Tammi 1998), the sixth book in her iconic Maria Kallio mystery series. The novel hit Japanese bookstores in late May. Tokyo Sogensha has previously published two other Maria Kallio books, Snow Woman (Luminainen, Tammi 1996) and Death Spiral (Kuolemanspiraali, Tammi 1997) to critical praise in Japan; major weekly magazine Sunday Mainichi called Snow Woman “a rich, rewarding book.”
This summer will also see the debut of several other outstanding Finnish thrillers worldwide. Karo Hämäläinen’s Cruel is the Night (Ilta on julma, WSOY 2013), a sharp and morbidly humorous tale of a dinner party that transitions from Agatha Christie-esque to pure Quentin Tarantino, will be published in Italy by Newton Compton in July.
This week Literackie in Poland will publish Laura (Tammi 2013), the first entry in J.K. Johansson’s Palokaski Trilogy. Centering on the disappearance of three young girls in an ordinary suburb, “the Finnish Twin Peaks” will also be available as an e-book. See a full Polish-language book trailer here. In the Netherlands, Laura was published in paperback and e-book by The House of Books in mid-June.
