Critical acclaim continues for authors Johanna Sinisalo and Emmi Itäranta. Locus, a well-known U.S-based science fiction and fantasy publication, has included both Sinisalo’s The Blood of Angels (Teos 2011) and Itäranta’s Memory of Water (Teos 2012) on its 2014 Recommended Reading List. The list, compiled by a group of reviewers and Locus editors, appeared in the February issue of the magazine.
Johanna Sinisalo’s The Blood of Angels (Teos 2011), a frightening look at a near-future world in which bees begin to disappear, was published in the UK in fall 2014 by Peter Owen. In addition to receiving starred reviews from Library Journal and Booklist, it has been praised by Kirkus Reviews and Publishers Weekly. This week Foksal will publish The Blood of Angels in Poland, where it has received strong advance buzz from critics.
Sinisalo’s latest novel, The Core of the Sun (Teos 2013) was published in Germany by Clett-Kotta in fall of 2014, and is due to be launched in the World English market in 2016 by Grove Atlantic.
Memory of Water (Teos 2012), Emmi Itäranta’s speculative fiction debut about a world nearly devoid of fresh water, has received rave reviews from publications including Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, The Guardian and The Washington Post since its U.S and UK publication by HarperCollins in 2014.
This year Memory of Water has been nominated both for the Philip K. Dick award, presented annually to distinguished science fiction published in paperback original form in the U.S, and for the Golden Tentacle award, a category of the Kitschies fantasy and speculative fiction awards that recognizes the year’s best debut.
Itäranta will complete her independent follow-up, City of Woven Streets, this year. It will be published in the U.S and UK in 2016.
Praise for The Blood of Angels:
“Stunning prose takes the reader down a twisting path between gritty ecoterrorism and another world, with winged messengers leading the way.”
– Library Journal, starred review
“Sinisalo juxtaposes one man’s personal grief with impending ecological disaster in this compelling and intimate rumination on animal rights, world food supply, and the indispensable role of bees to our environment…The story is told with a quiet, literary precision.”
– Booklist, starred review
Praise for Memory of Water:
“Where Itäranta shines is in her rejection of conventional plots and in her understated but compelling characters. The work is a deceptively tranquil examination of a world of dust and ashes where the tenacious weed of hope still survives.”
– Publishers Weekly, starred review
“The writing is gorgeous and delicate in this dystopian award-winning debut, which is unique in both its setting and the small scale that Finnish author Itäranta employs.”
– Library Journal, starred review
